About Circle of Security
Modern research into child development has increasingly focused on the role of the attachment relationships in children’s lives. These attachment relationships, particularly with parents, but also with other caregivers, have a profound effect on children’s capacity to relate to themselves and others, and to learn and grow according to their full potential.
The Circle of Security is a user-friendly model of attachment - it demonstrates the way in which children look to their parents and other caregivers for support as they move from their needs for safety and security to their needs for exploration and mastery throughout the day. Helping caregivers to see children’s behaviour through the lens of the relationship has proved a powerful tool in psychotherapeutic work with parents of young children and infants, and in educating parents and caregivers.
The model is easy for all people to understand, and is therefore very useful with hard-to-reach high risk groups. It can be used as a gateway into the child’s emotional world, allowing parents/ teachers/ other caregivers to support the child in learning new ways to manage difficult feelings and find alternatives to problematic behaviours.
